i have my exam in less than a week and i am stuggling sooooo much! its soo hard! please help me any advice would be much appriciated! thank you! here and the questions:

Q1) Show us what you know about the Popular Press
Examine two current newspapers from the Popular Press. What are the key features of their on-line and print based formats? Explain how each appeals to its target audience.
Your analysis needs to be based on two newspapers that are each targeted at a different readership.

Q2) As you know, newspaper circulation is in decline. Referring only to changes in the past ten years, explain how the popular press has tried to boost circulation.
How do you think the Popular Press will evolve in the future?
In you answer you need to respond to both parts of the question and include examples where appropriate.

Q3) The aim of the FYJ is to connect young people with the important social and political issues of the day.
Choose a current newspaper from the Popular Press and give us your ideas for its weekend youth section. We would like you to produce ideas for both print based and on-line format.
Tell us which newspaper you chose and explain how your ideas will appeal to a 15-24 year old market. Show how your print and on-line versions might link with each other.
Remember your proposals need to be appropriate to the newspaper for which you are writing, and your ideas need to appeal to both genders, with a focus on real news. You may wish to include sketches.

Q4) Now it is your opportunity to use your knowledge and understanding of the newspaper websites and to show us what your ideas look like.

Produce a design for the on-line youth news page.

Use the A3 design sheet provided. For headlines and images, you may wish to use real news stories; however, do not produce whole articles. You may wish to provide annotation to explain the function of certain features of your on-line news page

thank you for reading
for question 3:

FYJ
The Federation of Young Journalists

26 April 2010

Dear Student,

As you may know, the FYJ is an organisation set up to connect young people to the important social and political issues of the day.

The newspaper industry faces some serious problems:
- Newspaper circulation is declining
- The average age of a newspaper reader is over 55
- Newspapers have failed to engage with the 15 – 24 year old demographic.

We believe that newspapers have lost touch with young people. The needs of the youth audience are largely ignored by the Popular Press, and when young people are featured, they are often represented in a negative way.

The FYJ wants to recruit a dynamic media team to connect young people to the news. We are looking for enthusiastic young journalists with exciting ideas, who understand the needs of a youth audience, and can see how the Popular Press can use digital technology.

Your proposals need to include ideas that appeal to both ge

Took my exam a few weeks ago

For question one choose two newspapers. The Daily Mail and the sun are a good choice for this
and write about the
Layout and design boxes used? organized, headline?
Images and captions – amount of photos posed or snatched
Type of new stories covered – celebrity – good/bad news, surprise stories
way the stories are covered – This is the language used – Colloquial/formal, puns used
Remember you are talking about the newspaper in general and not a specific article

You need to write about the print version and the online version

the question says examine not compare. You do NOT need to compare

For question 2
this is slightly more difficult.
Look for online versions, updates to your mobile, reducing prices, freebies, adverts on tv

for the second part, you need more then one idea and remember this is your original idea, where the A* becomes possible as long as you describe well and include images. Your idea will still need to be able to subscribe to, otherwise no money is made.

for question 3. Remember its your age, what would you want
pictures, colours, comedy, big headlines, with slogans, more like a magazine so include a horoscope and other things suitable.

Real news – Not celeb

Remember to include why you would include everything. write about how the FYJ wants this and what it will do

try and use the same layout as the newspaper you chose.
drawing your idea is not that important

for task 5 you simply draw the idea for the online version that you have just described in task 4
and annotate it, saying why you have included this again.

I know the time seems like a long time to you now, but trust me its really not, majority of my class did not manage to finish the exam

Just learn your prep work very well and write fast

Good Luck, if you need any more help, Just ask

Pretty princess. i’m trying to add you to send you my notes but it says you do not allow people adding them.

OMG This is exactly what I’m doing…lol LOADS of research would be very useful.
Visit the news paper web pages regularly and buy 2/3 tabloids daily to see what they do.

I found a good website that analyses websites – use this to analyse some of the newspaper websites to find facts and figures. One of their great features is that that they show you what draws your attention on that particular page.

http://www.markosweb.com/

type in the webpage you want to see the analysis of and then choose the right one from the list.

Do not use: The guardian and times – they are broadsheets, not tabloids

Use: Daily Mail, Sun, Mirror , The express etc <— These are tabloids

Always refer to your target audience and try and link your stories to the current issues in media and also youth.

Gossip always interest youth. Politics is very important –> find out weather the newspaper is Left wing or right wing

Mention how it’s the first time 18 year olds are voting.

Try and find facts and figures

What is the most successfull paper right now?

Who sells the most, what are the most popular stories?
What makes that particular newspaper sell?

for example sex and gossip sell well, and because the election is about to take place – politics is one of the important thing too.

It’s all about research and taking notes and preparing.

Try and do the exam before the exam and see if you can find a marking specification online and improve it untill you think it’s perfect.

Good luck honey…hope I helped

Remember RESEARCH and sharing knowledge is the key to success! <– discuss with others in class and share ideas so you’ll do well in your exam.

Buy revision books and exam books for media.

Learn the media vocabulary and use the key terms.

Talk about developing technology and how people now use ipads and computers to access news rather than newspapers – why is this?

Create relevant questions and try and answer them in you answer, Remmeber to use PEE – point evidance explain x

edit: Also one of the key things you should mention is the online vs Print communications thing.

List advantages and disadvantages of both and try to show how online things are becoming more popular.

edit again: say how the youth are always portrayed in a negative way – they stereotype all youths as hoodies and chavs who mug people etc.

Think about what can interest the youth.

In webpages you can interact watch videos etc…you can do that with a newspaper.

What layout catches the attention of the youth? What is your main story? why is this? What impact will this have on the amount sold?

Dude =) you sort of helped me revise, I ad to think about this as I typed this — yaayy I gave myself more and more ideas as I was giving them to you =D

Your proposals need to include ideas that appeal to both genders. It is also important that you aim to represent people and events fairly and realistically.

Remember we are working to a tight deadline so keep your ideas concise and to the point.

Good Luck,

T Lloyd

Questions:

You may wish to provide annotation to explain the function of certain features of your on-line news page

the exam is on the 7th and the 10th of may :S

Any tips and advice would also be greatly appreciated

For task 1, i am just noting the key features of the lamnguage in ‘The sun’ online and newspaper, and the ‘times’ online and newspaper, and comparing them as they are easy to compare because of there differences. This is the notes i have so far, you can borrow
Media Studies Notes for exam

Task 1

 THE SUN ONLINE

Offers stories in more order
Shows videos of incidents to give a more clear view
Online also gives the reader to see other peoples opinion on articles
Also, you can see a history of articles from a while ago
At the moment, it has no cost
Offers more range on stories
It also offers online polls to be more interactive with the reader
You can ‘share’ articles on social networking sites
Page 3 link offers a lot more girls than just the one in a standard Sun Newspaper
It has links to ‘Sun Bingo’ and other games
It also offers’ News Alerts’ which give the reader regular news updates during the day
Completely free content, but you have to pay for internet
Can be accessed at home
Saves trees
Both online and newspaper uses alliteration to have catchy headlines
Puns are used to ‘trick’ the reader into reading the story

THE SUN NEWSPAPER

Stories are main ones, fitted onto the paper
Very mobile, articles can be shown to others without having to take your laptop or computer
People who struggle with technology can easily read a simple newspaper
Becoming cheaper
Sometimes, you get free items when you buy it
Can be kept, and recycled
Headline is always something that will make you buy the paper
It is transportable, and when you don’t have access to a computer, then you can read it

TIMES ONLINE

More formal to reader
Gives the weather in a certain area
Doesn’t offer a lot more than the paper
Gives us politics and law, more than celebrity gossip and banter
Headlines are given on one page
Definitely for the politician interests
Less pictures and more information
More plain, not really eye popping

TIMES NEWSPAPER

Can sometimes offer free items
Has to appeal, and have catchy headlines as shops will have other newspapers too
Language is similar to the same days TimesOnline

I personally feel that it does, and I seek to attain a better insight. My reason for believing it does is that the newspapers all write in a bias, rather than objective way, about news and events. I don’t know if its done in such a way to appeal to their target market (their customers), or whether the papers are written in such a way to achieve a higher purpose, or both. In the UK, our new "coalition government" is still in its teething stages but it seems like the newspapers are reflective of what this new government stands for. All of a sudden, there is this "uproar" about the numbers on welfare / benefits. I’ve read a few newspapers today and they all attack people in benefits at some point, and some of them make it their main story. I believe this is to soften the blow when our so-called coalition government phases out the benefits system. After all, there has never been such focus placed on the numbers on benefits in previous years. It would seem like the media can be used as a political tool for social reform. I’ll tell you a secret, I live in Northern Ireland. And ever since the leaders of the two contesting groups agreed to try to reach some sort of an agreement, the news stations and papers have flamed any action taken by either side, and crime has dropped substantially. Such action was widely accepted as part of our heritage, culture and lives, even though the majority detested it; and this has changed thanks in part by the media. The wasting young men in our society used to commit crimes because it was the "cool to be bad", but now that we’ve had a major paradigm shift such crimes aren’t as common as no one wants to be hated by the masses. And as for the papers, why do they broadly state that all claimants are "Workshy" and never express that there are individuals out there who need such a system to survive?

two words swine flu
